"It's never too late to be what you might have been."

If you haven't read a play since your high school English class conquered Shakespeare, you're in for a treat. The Mixtape isn't like anything you ever read in literature class. It's interesting, vibrant, and colorful. The characters are flawed and exciting and real and ALIVE. It's been way too long since I sat down and just enjoyed a play.

From the perspective of a writer, I think readers who are interested in acting/drama/theater will enjoy this play just because it's different. Polly was someone I could relate to. She's flawed, but likable. The story moves quickly and because it's written in the format of a play, you aren't bogged down with page after page of descriptions of the scenery. You still get descriptions, mind you, but this play really gets to the meat of the story.

The Mixtape An Urban Love Story A play with music in two acts Paula M Stinson 9781329044746 Books Reviews

The author calls this a play, but it’s really as much a streaming narrative of emotional chaos and seething resentments that scream for resolution. Taking us from lead-character Polly’s thoughts of suicide and self-loathing through failed relationships, torturous abuse at the hands of her narcissistic father, and the drug-addled neglect of a sociopathic mother, The Mixtape uses the conceit of psychologist and patient to navigate through Polly’s lifelong quest for acknowledgement, understanding, love, and redemption. Her meth-fueled maelstrom of rage, pain, and rejection gives this stormy rampage an air of calamity, yet with sharp asides, topical wisdom, and the timely intermixing of relevant music, author Stinson keeps the connection between Dr. Frank and his patient therapeutic and soothing. The interweaving of raunchy quips and Buddhist aphorisms often startles us, and Stinson respects Polly’s demons enough to keep her from getting maudlin; in a way, she’s proud of her tumultuous odyssey, despite the fact it’s driving her to a violent apotheosis. A compelling, gut-wrenching read from an exciting new voice in modern dramaturgy!
'The Mixtape' is a heart-wrenching play of one woman's triumph over the negative impact of her childhood. This immersive script pulls you quickly into an unforgettable story of finding one's true self, and escaping the negativities that tie us to our past sins by bringing them into the light.

Paula Stinson's characters inspire those in similar situations to break free of the negative cycle that haunts them, and to find hope and happiness starting from within themselves. This is a hard play to put down once you start reading it, and a great gift for yourself or anyone who is depressed and in need of some positive reinforcement.
Paula combines her tumultuous life with her love of astrology, numerology, and Destiny Cards. She sees the synchronicities throughout her life. Her parents were emotionally and physically abusive and unable to nurture in any helpful way.

The source of our wisdom, according to Paula, comes from our “spiritual knowledge which can guide us soundly to serenity – if we allow it to.”

You learn about Polly’s journey through her conversations with Frank, her psychologist. Their discussions are raw and unfiltered. Polly threatens to commit suicide, suffers from depression, a recovering drug addict, who suffers panic attacks.

Frank helps guides her through her watershed events that shaped her in a fundamental way and pair them with songs that mirror the experiences, creating a mixtape.

Each scene addresses different experiences, all heart wrenching. She learned to feel, speak her truth, love herself, choose happiness, and believe in her dreams.
MIXTAPE AN URBAN LOVE STORY
Paula Stinson’s first attempt at stage drama must be recognized as a great success! Every once in a while a first attempt hits the mark. Stinson has scored a bulls-eye with this two person drama. You may not always love or, for that matter, like her main character Mary-Elizabeth O’Flaherty Wills “Polly” Bond (Is it just me, or does “Polly Bond” remind you of a dental adhesive?) . Polly sometimes seems to confuse “craft” with celebrity and her metaphysics get a little spooky at times. However, her ambition, her desire for love and her sometimes profane description of her damaged childhood draw the reader into her story and keep the reader intrigued until the end of the play. Paula Stinson has a real talent for writing dramatic dialogue.
In this brief but brave memoir two-act play is an intriguing but realistic story of love, betrayal, and personal growth. The narrative bounces from one looming personal disaster to another, and each act ends with a perfect cliffhanger that makes putting down the book quite difficult. While the story itself is engaging, the true beauty of the play is the way it narrates a self-help book through Polly’s own development. Helpful phrases and paragraphs are reproduced through the play, bringing to the story an added dimension that will be refreshing to anyone who has found themselves searching for insightful answers. It’s a fast and easy read as well as thought provoking. Highly Recommend.
Every so often you read a book- or play in this case- that truly leaves you breathless, a different person from when you began. This is one such book. I don't know who this author is but I can't wait for more of her work! When I first started reading it I really had no expectations but I can say with confidence now that I most definitely have the highest of expectations from her (hopefully) forthcoming work. The Mixtape tells the story of young Polly and how she overcomes the demons of her childhood, namely her abusive father. The story was poignant, horrifying, and even funny at times. It is very well-written and will grab your attention from the start. Just be prepared to experience some deeply buried emotions you had just about forgotten existed. This is a book you will remember for a long time. Well-done!
