I love this book. It is hilarious. However it is superficially irreverent and iconoclastic. Mr. Mencken is a satirist. I am not always sure what his real point is. I found that reading William Manchester's biography about Mr. Mencken to be immensely valuable in trying to decipher this book. If one can just enjoy a humorous reading without getting caught up in a particular cause or agenda, this book is perfect. If one is easily offended, I would recommend proceeding with caution. I think Mr. Mencken enjoyed being offensive at some level. In the event one reads this and enjoys it, one may wish to consider "Candide" by Voltaire. Thank You...Product details

Comfortable reading with great prose and insight. A bit dated in perspective, but nevertheless enjoyable. His take on world conflict, is uncanny, though a bit simplistic.
I found this book to be classic in terms of Mencken's approach to articulately memorializing his take on the world around him. As it was written in 1918, portions of the section of the book dealing with the suffragette movement will seem rather passe to the 21st century reader. He was clearly not a supporter of the movement. That said, his personal views on the early women's movement notwithstanding, it is noteworthy that the one woman he married was a politically active suffragette herself. This edition is some 185 pages in length, the font is legible and the various 'chapters' though numerous, are succinct. Consequently, Mencken manages to cover much terrain while avoiding prolonged pontification.
Every young man should read this before his first date...

Very eye opening...
I enjoyed this book very much. Mencken was a genius in using the English language, and this book was fascinating from that standpoint alone. His views on women, men, and their interactions (both sacred and profane), are challenging to the modern mind and revealing in their historical context. The book is just plain FUN to read.
However ... and this is a BIG flaw ... this entire edition is filled with the most absurd and aggravating typographical errors. It seems to be an optical scan of the original printed version, and then never given the benefit of even a cursory proofreading. The only reason I do not demand a refund of the purchase price is that the book was a free download.
A well stated and coherent opinion on a topic that has since become so flat that nobody needs to think about it anymore.
H.L. Mencken has done us all a favor here with his remarkably eloquent and well-mannered discussion of one of the most polarizing issues out there. Mencken proves his ability to think outside the masses with this pithy manifesto on the nature of man and woman's dynamic. The writing is just plain entertaining. He writes what he thinks, which is something almost unheard of in this day and age. We are now tasked to write what we can support with "stats and hard evidence," rather than what we observe in the real world.
Male readers will be surprised by his disgust with their small mindedness and wayward industriousness. Female readers will be similarly off put with his casual unearthing of their deviousness, and remarks on their capacity for male production. I will resist giving away too much of his argument because this piece could be read almost entirely on a lazy Sunday.
This book will leave you much more informed when encountering the modern male/female books which resoundingly declare females as the future of our species. What we will find is that the situation is much more complex, as we may not all be reduced to workers competing for financial success. Read, enjoy, marvel, and appreciate the enlightenment it will bring!
Excellent writing, the attitude and opinions are not modern and could bother some, but keep the period and intended audience in mind while reading and you'll gain insight into the culture of that time and how things have changed.
